The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has affirmed that green technology and renewable energy can create millions of jobs, boost industrialisation and drive technological advancement if adopted in Nigeria.
This was stated by the National President of NIEE, Nureni Ogunyemi, during the 2025 Public lecture, award presentation and annual general meeting of the NIEE, Oyo State chapter in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The event also witnessed the presentation of awards to the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Founder Fresh FM, Dr Olayinka Ayefele, Ecopreneur and Founder, Waste Museum, Jumoke Olowookere; Managing Director, Planover Engineering Consult Limited, Naheem Raji; Managing Director, SPECTMEG Construction Nigeria Limited, Gbolagade Razzaq and Managing Director, Bentley Adams Nigeria Limited, Oseni Momodu for their various contributions to environment.
Speaking on the theme, “Innovations in green technology and renewable energy“, Ogunyemi further stated that Nigeria stands to benefit from solar energy expansion to power rural and urban communities, waste-to-energy projects that reduce pollution while generating electricity, Eco-friendly construction may promote energy efficiency in buildings and smart grid systems that optimize energy distribution and consumption.
The NIEE national president who was represented by NIEE Assistant National Membership Secretary, Mufutau Mustapha, added that innovations will not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also open new opportunities for entrepreneurship, investment and industrial diversification.
He further added that Innovative Green Technology and Renewable energy solutions must be embraced because they serve as a strategic imperative for sustainable growth.
He said “As we gather here today, the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges climate change, deforestation, pollution and energy crises all of which directly impact human health, economic stability and overall National development. Nigeria like many other developing nations is at a critical juncture where Innovative Green Technologies and Renewable energy solutions must be embraced not just as a necessity but as a strategic imperative for sustainable growth.
“Green technology and renewable energy are no longer futuristic concepts, they are urgent solutions to the pressing environmental issues we face today. This shift towards sustainable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower and Bioenergy is crucial in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating climate change and ensuring energy security.”

He, however, urged Nigerians to champion sustainable practices in their respective fields, support adoption of renewable energy solutions in the communities and advocate for policies that encourage green innovation at all levels of governance.
Also speaking Guest speaker and Lecturer from the department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Professor AbdulGaniy Raji stated that new underdeveloping innovations recently researched could serve as alternative to source of energy such as electricity.
Speaking on the topic “Green technology :a sustainable future, he lamented that that pollutions, waste, emissions from industries, and human activities are reducing the availability of oxygen in the air .
He stated that with the help of innovations , it has been discovered that something as smaller
can be used as alternative to the usual big solar panel .
In an interview with journalist, the Chairman, NIEE Oyo state chapter, Dr Abdulwasiu Ajagbe stated that NIEE had decided to pick the theme of the event “ Innovations in Green Technology and Renewable Energy “ for human advancement.
He said that the theme is being put into consideration having known that the environment is threatened in so many ways which calls for innovations to curtail it .

Also in an interview with one of the awardee, Jumoke Olowookere , appreciated NIEE for the award , while she added that the award is an encouragement for her to do more .
