As I write this, the hunger crisis in Nigeria has continued to escalate, and it’s deeply concerning that people who choose to voice out about it are allegedly being targeted and silenced. An example is the recent controversy surrounding Ushie Uguamaye, a Lagos-based NYSC member.
Uguamaye’s viral TikTok video aimed at criticising President Tinubu’s government over the soaring cost of living has sparked a national conversation.
This issue has brought to the forefront the pressing issue of economic hardship in Nigeria and the political atmosphere of our dear nation. Netizens have since spoken out of frustration, requesting that the government should be tolerant of criticism rather than silencing them.
The recent incident highlights the struggles Nigerians face due to the government’s economic reforms. With inflation rates soaring to 24.48% in January 2025, it’s no wonder citizens are frustrated. The prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, making basic necessities unaffordable.
As a nation, we must prioritise freedom of speech and encourage constructive criticism. The government should focus on addressing the economic hardships rather than silencing critics.
