Former Special Adviser to the Governor of Delta State on DESOPADEC, (Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission), Chief Emuoboh Gbagi, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritise investing in the youth as a strategic pillar for national development.
He firmly believes that investing in the education of young Nigerians is key to addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges and preparing for a prosperous future.
Gbagi stated, “If we want to see real development in this country, we must start with the youth. Education is the most powerful tool for transforming individuals and, by extension, the nation. It equips young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take on leadership roles and drive innovation.”
According to him, this conviction is rooted in his understanding that an educated populace is essential for building a competitive economy and a stable society.
He urged the government and private sector to collaborate to create more education opportunities, particularly in underserved areas.
“We need to expand access to quality education, not just in urban centres, but in rural areas where many bright young minds are being left behind. The future of Nigeria depends on it,” he said, adding, “Such initiatives can help to reduce inequality and create a more inclusive society.”
Gbagi also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive national education policy that emphasises vocational and technical training.
“It’s not just about academic degrees. We need to build a workforce capable of driving industrialisation and technological advancement. That starts with equipping young people with practical skills,” he asserted.
By fostering skill development, the government, he said, can address unemployment and ensure that the youth are ready for the demands of the modern job market.
Drawing from his own educational journey, Gbagi exemplified the transformative power of education, saying, he began his academic foundation at Greensprings Primary School in Lagos, where he learned the value of curiosity and a strong educational foundation.
“My early education instilled in me a love for learning, which set the stage for my future,” he remarked, adding that prioritising children’s education underscores the need for nurturing environments that foster curiosity and passion for knowledge from a young age.
His experience at Atlantic Hall Secondary School in Maryland, Lagos, he said further honed his critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
“The rigorous academic environment challenged me to excel and think independently, qualities that are essential for today’s youth facing complex global challenges. Schools should not only focus on rote learning but also encourage creativity and critical thinking among students,” he explained.
Gbagi’s subsequent move to Munster High School in Indiana, USA, provided him with exposure to diverse perspectives and cultures.
“This experience broadened my worldview and taught me the importance of adaptability, a skill that is invaluable in today’s interconnected world. Such exposure can cultivate global citizens who understand and appreciate cultural diversity, which is vital for peace and progress in Nigeria,” he noted.
Reflecting on these experiences, he stated, “Education has been the bedrock of my achievements. It opened my mind to new ideas and gave me the tools to navigate complex challenges in business and public service.”
He said his educational background significantly contributed to his success in governmental roles, allowing him to approach policy-making with a well-informed and strategic perspective.
In addition, Gbagi advised the government to invest in teacher training and development. “Quality education starts with quality teachers. We must ensure that our educators are well-equipped to inspire and guide our youth. Investing in teacher development can significantly enhance the learning experience and outcomes for students,” he stressed.
Gbagi concluded by reinforcing the urgency of investing in education for Nigeria’s youth, saying, “The time to act is now. If we fail to empower our youth today, we risk jeopardising our country’s future. With the right policies and dedication, we can create a generation of leaders who will elevate Nigeria on the global stage.”
He said his journey serves as a testament to the potential that can be unlocked through education, underscoring the critical need for a robust educational framework to nurture the next generation of innovators and leaders.
