The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; Chairman Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Solomon Adeola and the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Yusuf Gagdi will be conferred with the honorary degrees of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).
The Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Professor Abayomi Fasina who disclosed while addressing journalists on Monday said the three individuals would be decorated during the 8th convocation ceremony of the university on February 10, 2024.
Fasina explained that the trio have distinguished themselves in the services to the people and the country in the last few years, adding that the institution recognized their efforts to humanity and the nation through their legislative interventions in the National Assembly.
The VC explained that the institution under his leadership in the last three years had witnessed tremendous progress in the area of school enrolment, infrastructural development and community service, with its lecturers making waves globally.
According to him, the feats being recorded has made the institution the fourth most subscribed university in the country, with the number of students increasing from 7,000 in 2021 to over 9,000 in 2024.
The VC who expressed delight over the commencement of the medicine programme in the university, said the first set of graduates from the College of Medicine would soon be produced.
On the convocation ceremony, the professor of soil science revealed that a total of 6,563 students will be graduating with 114 making First class; 2,762 second class upper; 2793 second class lower and 688 will be graduating with a third class.
In the postgraduate college, professor Fasina stated that the university will be graduating 163 students with a Master’ degree, 36 for PhD programmes and seven will graduate with post-graduate diplomas.
He said that the Vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Professor Adenike Oladiji will deliver the Founder’s Day lecture, while the convocation lecture will be delivered by the Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Professor Ishaq Oloyede.
On the killings of two traditional rulers and abduction of school children and teachers by gunmen in the state, the Professor explained that there is need for the government to rise and defend the people with the right approach.
He regretted the manner at which the two monarchs were murdered, urging government and the security agencies to deploy drones and other technological devices towards arresting the perpetrators.
As one of the ways of addressing the insecurity level, he advocated the clearing of forests across the state and making it inhabitable for criminal elements to hide and unleash attacks on the citizens.
