With less than two months to the celebration of Christmas, scarcity of fuel has resurfaced in Sokoto State.
Our correspondent who monitored the situation in the state reported that most filling stations especially in the metropolis have stopped dispensing the product for some days now.
It was gathered that only NNPC, A. A Rano and some other few independent marketers have been discharging the contents consistently.
Some of the motorists who spoke with our correspondent lamented the situation, calling on the government and its relevant agencies to urgently look for solutions about it.
Mallam Abubakar Dani, one of the motorists who said he spent close to three hours on the queue before he was able to get fuel described the situation as worrisome.
According to him, “imagine fuel scarcity at this time of the year when some people especially Christian faithful are preparing to travel to their village for Christmas celebration.
“What annoys most about this current scarcity is the fact that it came when the purchasing power of citizens is very low.
“You will hardly see people buy more than 2,000 to 3,000 naira of the product at a time compared to before when people use to fill their tank,” he added.
Meanwhile, black marketers have now resurfaced in the metropolis taking advantage of the situation of fuel scarcity.
It will be recalled that the Sokoto State government in conjunction with the fuel marketers in the state had recently placed a ban on selling the products into a jerry can.
The government through the executive order signed by the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, announced this as part of a measure to curtail the spread of insecurity within the state.
It also announced that no filling stations within the state should sell more than N5,000 worth of fuel to motorists at a given time.
Reacting to the development, the Public relations officer of the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN), in Sokoto State, Nasiru Aliyu, described the scarcity of petroleum in the state as seasonal things
He, however, confirmed that the price of the product from the Depot has increased from between N148 and N149 to between N159 and N161 per litre.
He also explained that the price of diesel used in transporting the products from Lagos to Sokoto has also in the last one month, jumped from 280 to 350 per litres.
While calling on the government to do the needful, Aliyu also attributed the increase of the products at the Depot to the increase in the exchange rate.
He however appealed to the people of the state not to engage in panic buying, saying the association in the state will do everything humanly possible to ensure the availability of the products.
