Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for effective collaboration among sister law enforcement agencies in the country to tackle traffic impunity and save the lives of road users.
Speaking at a one-day seminar organised by the Kwara state sector command of the FRSC for personnel of the Police, the Kwara state Road Transport Management Agency (KWARTMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Immigration, Department of Security Services (DSS), and Prisons in Ilorin on Thursday, the state sector commander, Uche Wihioka, said that synergy among the sister security agencies would encourage the spirit of one police and intelligence gathering.
The FRSC boss, who said that traffic impunity is a man-made phenomenon in the society, frowned at the attitude of some drivers who drive recklessly because of over speeding, drunkenness or just because they drive influential people in the society.

He stressed the need for effective collaboration through sharing of information and intelligence among sister law enforcement officers in order to check traffic impunity and reduce carnage on Nigeria roads.
“With synergy among sister law enforcement agencies, traffic monitoring would be enhanced and traffic offenders would be apprehended as they inform FRSC officials of their observations which can, for example, help reduce heavy road traffic at some flashpoints during peak hours of the day”, he said.
The FRSC boss, who said that 85 per cent of road crashes are caused by human factors such as over-speeding, added that one could manoeuvre the vehicle to escape crash in the event of a possible accident if one was on moderate speed.
He identified other causes as mechanical and environmental factors, saying that, vehicle owners should ensure their vehicles are in good condition and drive carefully, especially when it rains.
“Everyone is a stakeholder in all areas of road traffic regulation and monitoring in order to ensure road discipline, for instance, in the use of a seat belt to minimise the impact of injury during road crashes.
“Life has no duplicate or photocopy and it’s better to be late than be the late”, he said.
He also called for an effective judicial system on road traffic laws, while charging FRSC unit commanders to replicate the seminar in their various units.
“Since law enforcement agencies could collaborate during elections, it should not be difficult to encourage synergy to reduce carnage on our roads”, he said.
The event also witnessed decoration of two newly promoted senior officers in the sector command, namely Victoria Babatunde and Ramat Olawunmi Oyeniyi.
