Fortify govt officials with adequate security in south-east, Reps urge IGP

On Thursday, the House of Representatives called upon the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to provide adequate security and manpower for government officials and infrastructure in flashpoints in the South East and the country in general.

This decision came after the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Emeka Nnamani (LP-Abia) at the plenary.

While presenting the motion, the lawmaker noted that the violent attacks by hoodlums in South Eastern Nigeria had become increasingly dangerous in recent times.

He expressed concern that the attacks on high-ranking Nigerians were escalating, and if not addressed promptly, could pose a threat to governments, personnel, and others at all levels.

He cited examples of attacks on prominent Nigerians by unknown gunmen in the South East, including Sen. Ifeanyi Uba, Sen. Rochas Okorocha, and former Gov. Ikedi Ohakim.

He also mentioned an incident on July 25, where two policemen were attacked and killed while on the convoy of the State Commissioner for Trade Commerce and Industry, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, in Abia State. The assailants also set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the Abia State Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Industry.

As a consequence of the killing of the two policemen, there was unrest in Aba, with security operatives such as the police and army unleashing terror on innocent people, resulting in the shutdown of the market.

The House urged the IGP and the Chief of Army Staff, CoAS, to call their personnel to order and foster a better Police-Army civil relationship with their host communities.

Furthermore, the House called on the police to set up a high-powered investigative team to bring the hoodlums responsible for the attacks to justice.

It was emphasized that the government’s security apparatus must be deployed to restore peace and ensure the security of the lives and property of the residents of Aba State.
