The Nigerian banking and telecommunications sectors have lost one of their pioneering figures, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, who passed away on April 8, 2025, just a day before his 86th birthday.
Dozie, a respected entrepreneur and public figure, was known for his remarkable contributions to financial services and telecom development in Nigeria.

Born on April 9, 1939
Pascal Dozie was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, and raised in a devout Catholic home.
Founded Diamond Bank
In 1990, Dozie founded Diamond Bank which grew into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions before merging with Access Bank. Leadership of the bank was later handed over to his son, Uzoma Dozie.

Pioneer Chairman of MTN Nigeria
The late business icon also served as the inaugural chairman of MTN Nigeria, playing a key role in establishing the telecom giant’s presence in the country.
Academic Background
Dozie earned a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University, London.
Family and Legacy
He was married to Chinyere Dozie and is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Known for his humility, vision, and service, Dozie also received the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
