The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, said the FIRS remains committed to supporting initiatives that drive tax policy development and capacity-building, not just in Nigeria but across the West African region.
He stated that the FIRS recognises the importance of domestic resource mobilisation in achieving economic development and growth.
Adedeji made this remark on Tuesday at the West Africa Tax Administration Forum Country Correspondent/Heads of Corporate Communications Functions Conference and the 20th WATAF Council meeting, held in Abuja.
The FIRS boss stressed that, historically, Nigeria has always been at the forefront of promoting international tax cooperation and has been a key contributor to the development of the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF), providing technical assistance and capacity-building programmes to member countries.
“Our country has also been at the forefront of promoting regional cooperation in tax administration, recognising the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges,” Adedeji further stated.

According to him, “The role of effective communication in tax administration cannot be overstated. As Country Correspondents and Heads of Corporate Communications, you are the frontline ambassadors of our tax institutions, responsible for shaping narratives, clarifying policies, and fostering voluntary compliance.”
He urged participants to actively engage in discussions, leverage the gathering to build stronger professional networks, and commit to implementing the knowledge gained for the betterment of tax systems. He also commended WATAF for continuously providing a platform that fosters collaboration and capacity-building across West African tax administrations.
The WATAF Council will deliberate on issues concerning the institutional sustainability of WATAF, consider the WATAF progress report, and carry out other administrative reviews of the WATAF Secretariat’s operations.
