Night fire, on Tuesday, destroyed goods worth several millions of naira at Katsina-Ala market in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
Tribune Online learnt that the fire started around 8:30 pm and affected several stores in the market.
According to a market woman who deals in fabric, Mrs Kertyo said that the fire destroyed stores where foodstuffs, electronics and cosmetics are sold.
“Many of us were still in the market when the fire started, no one can say what actually caused the inferno. It was a shout of fire from the electronics shops that made us know there was fire outbreak in the market,” Mrs Kertyo told our correspondent on the phone.
The chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government, Alfred Atera, who confirmed the fire incident said that he had visited the market.
He, however, called on the state government to come to the aids of the market owners.
“We are crying to the government to intervene because people’s life savings have gone. Most people were trapped there and some are in the hospital also and needs help.
“So we appeal to the government to intervene to alleviate the suffering of the people,” Atera said.
