A Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Calabar, Cross Rivers state capital on Friday remanded Mallam Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, 48, in Correctional Centre for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter, Aisha.
The respondent a native of Bundugudu LGA of Zamfara State, residing at No. 27 Edem Odo Street, Calabar the Cross River State capital was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of his daughter.
Umaru was remanded by Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene after hearing an exparte motion filed by the Police Prosecutor, O. S Umoren.
Umoren had told the court that the exparte motion became necessary in order for the defendant to be remanded in prison custody until the completion of the investigation of the matter.
The Prosecutor said that the motion was in pursuant of section 4 of the police act 2020 and also the Cross River State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2016.
The motion was however opposed by the counsel to the defendant, Mohammed Shaibu, who argued that he was not duly served the motion before the arraignment of his client.
The Chief Magistrate subsequently granted the motion supported by eight paragraphs and adjourned the case to December 3.
Checks by Tribune Online revealed that Aminu is also standing trial along with 20 others on a five-count charge bordering on attempted murder, and breach of peace before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja.
