The Kogi State Council has approved a memo containing the bills for the establishment of Kogi State University, Kabba, and other related matters in 2023.
The State Attorney General has been directed to transmit the bill to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage into law.
During a briefing by the State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, it was stated that a University Law is a prerequisite for the National Universities Commission (NUC) to recognize and approve any university established in Nigeria.
Jones hinted that the State government was working towards obtaining NUC’s approval for the State University before the end of the coming weeks. He mentioned that the recently inaugurated implementation committee, chaired by renowned Professor of English Language, Prof. Olu Obafemi, was working with other stakeholders to expedite the process.
The Commissioner took the opportunity to clarify the rumours regarding the conversion of the College of Education Technical, Kabba, and the location of the University. He clarified that the news was false and based on unauthenticated information, largely a premonition by some individuals.
However, he pointed out that the committee, after careful consideration, concluded that it was more expedient to start Kogi State University, Kabba, at the current site of the College of Education Technical in Kabba. The College of Education would be relocated to another venue, and the government was considering Mopa-Moro Local Government Area for this purpose.
Meanwhile, the immediate past Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Matthew Kolawole, praised Governor Yahaya Bello for siting the newly established Kogi State University in Kabba, stating that it was a monumental action.
In a press statement signed by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Femi Olugbemi, Kolawole expressed his confidence in Governor Yahaya Bello’s determination to take the state to another level of development, particularly in the educational sector. He described the Governor as a God-sent leader who has come to uplift the living standards of the people.
Kolawole commended Governor Yahaya Bello for ensuring fairness, equity, and justice in all his actions. He noted that the Governor recognized all three federal constituencies in Kogi West, instead of the usual Okun and Lokoja/Koto Karfe constituencies. He expressed no regrets about joining the Governor’s government in 2017, as his loyalty had paid off.
The former Speaker stated that the people of Okunland would continue to be grateful for the fulfilment of their long-standing desire to have a higher learning institution within their territory. He pledged continued loyalty and support to Governor Yahaya Bello until his last breath.
He urged members of the 8th assembly to expedite the passage of the bill into law without wasting time, as it is an opportunity for them to create an indelible record for themselves.
Kolawole expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, the Chairman of the Technical Committee, Professor Olu Obafemi, and other members of the Executive Council for recommending the existing campus of the Kogi State College of Education Technical, Kabba, as the take-off campus for the university.
He also assured that the people of Kabba, as the host community, would continue to maintain peace and decorum to fast-track the final take-off of the university in Kabba.
