All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2019 election and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chief Bayo Adelabu, has offered to rebuild the two police stations burnt during the EndSARS protest in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, last year.
The two police stations, located in Ojo, Akinyele Local Government Area of the state and old Gbagi in Egbeda Local Government Area, were set ablaze by hoodlums during the October 2020 protest.
The statement said Adelabu is prepared to begin the rebuilding of the police stations, given their importance to the security of lives and property in the affected areas.
Adelabu, who is a former chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, pledged his support to the Oyo State Police Command, as an indigene and a stakeholder to strengthen the security architecture of the state.
“The security of Oyo State deserves urgent and prompt attention by relevant stakeholders for the protection of lives and property of indigenes and residents as well as the social and economic development of the state.
“Almost seven months after the EndSARS protest, the government is yet to reconstruct any of the burnt stations. This is what prompted us to decide to rebuild the stations immediately, especially those in volatile locations like Ojoo and Bola Ige International Market, Old Gbagi, on new Ife road,” he said.
Chief Adelabu explained that everyone has a crucial role to play to strengthen the security architecture of the state which was well secured during the last administration and called for support for the police.
“On the welfare of the widows of the EndSARS victims, we believe that it is also taking too long for the government to respond to the yearnings of these poor women whose husbands died during the protest, by relieving them of the heavy financial burdens left behind for them.
“It is not that we didn’t know what to do immediately but we have waited for over six months for the government to come to their aid. This is our own little way of relieving them of the financial responsibilities as this goes a long way in motivating serving officers of the police,” Chief Adelabu added.
Responding, the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Onadeko, thanked Chief Adelabu for the visit and commended him for his good gesture to the police.
She tasked other notable indigenes and residents of the state to take a cue from Adelabu’s gesture by extending support to the police as security of lives and property is everybody’s responsibility.
She expressed her gratitude over the donation to the widows and assured them that she would arrange for the widows to receive the cash donation by themselves directly from Chief Adelabu for transparency.
On his offer to rebuild the burnt stations, the accepted Chief Adelabu’s offer to rebuild the stations and confirmed that he would be called upon to start work in conjunction with the works department of the State Command as soon as the paperwork is completed.
He asked Chief Adelabu to make a formal offer in writing to the police and approval will be duly processed.
The formal offer to rebuild the stations, the statement said, was sent to the police headquarters immediately after the meeting and inspection of the razed buildings.
