The House of Representatives has ordered the immediate investigation of the status of the Karu 132/33KV Substation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The House also urged the Federal Ministry of Power and all other relevant agencies of government to ensure the immediate relocation of the substation.
These resolutions followed the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Investigate the Functionality Status of the Karu 132/33KV Substation to Meet the Electricity Demands of the Federal Capital Territory,” sponsored by Hon. Agbedi, Yeitiemone Frederick.
The House noted that the Karu 132/33KV substation was built by the Federal Government of Nigeria through a loan obtained from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank to fund the National Energy Development Project (NEDP).
It also noted that the main objective of the project was to stabilise the power supply situation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while collaborating with the World Bank toward achieving an efficient and robust national grid.
The House informed that the Karu 132/33KV substation site is gradually sinking, causing dysfunction and imminent collapse, thus posing a potential disaster waiting to happen.
The House was concerned that this substation is located in a residential area that poses a serious danger to human health, and one can comprehend the untold damage it may cause to the lives and properties of residents in the area.
The House said it was cognisant of the need to immediately relocate the substation to more effectively meet the electricity demands of the Federal Capital Territory and prevent other hazardous consequences.
When the motion was put into a voice vote, it was unanimously supported by members, and the Speaker mandated the Committee on Power to carry out the investigation and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
