I want to know how important is daily working for people in their 70s and 80s and how long such walks should be.

Walking for people in their seventies and eighties is not just good exercise; it is one of the most powerful tools for maintaining the quality and duration of life at an age when the alternatives to continuing to do so are progressively less acceptable.
This is not motivational rhetoric; it is simply what the physiology consistently shows, and any physician working with this demographic knows that the minute an older person stops walking, a process begins that is simply difficult to turn back.
The cardiovascular benefits are real and well-documented, and they are arguably not even the most significant factor for this demographic. What walking maintains, and nothing else does with the same effectiveness, is functional independence.
Balance, coordination, bone density, joint flexibility, and the neuromuscular integration required to effectively navigate the world are all maintained by the act of walking in ways that are made starkly clear when it is lost. The person who walks every day is, in fact, training their body to remain upright and attentive, and this is the very definition of living independently or not.

Regarding distance, the honest answer for clinicians is that there has never been any rigorous research in the science of aging that led to the ten thousand steps per day recommendation, which is not even applicable in any meaningful way for people in their seventies and eighties.
More applicable research evidence suggests that between three thousand and six thousand steps per day, or one and a half to three miles, has been associated with significant health benefits in older adults without posing any risk of overexertion injuries. Consistency is much more important than distance.
Anyone who can walk thirty minutes per day at a comfortable pace, but with purpose and intention, is doing something of profoundly greater value than someone who shoots for high distances sporadically and quits in frustration or discouragement. Walking is not just important for people in their seventies and eighties; it is, arguably, one of the most potent methods available for maximizing the quality and length of life at an age when the alternatives to staying mobile become progressively less acceptable.
