THE 1984 alumni set of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI), has offered scholarship awards to two students for the 2019/2020 academic session.
The beneficiaries, Adewole Deborah (Economics) and Ajayi Rhoda (Biology), were awarded a cheque of N100,000 each to support them school fees, books and accommodation for the academic session.
The alumni, who graduated from the school when it was a College of Education before it was a upgraded to a university last year by the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi, said the scholarship award would be done every year to help the students meet up with their financial obligations in the institution.
The captain of the 1984 set, Mr Emma Alade, who spoke during the maiden edition of the award at the institution, noted that the school contributed in no small measure to what they had achieved in their chosen careers, hence the need to look back and assist the institution and the students.
Represented by a member of the set, Dr Remi Olatunde, the captain revealed that aside the scholarship award to the students, the set identified non-availability of portable water as a challenge to both students and staff for this reason we have sunk a borehole and installed overhead tanks for hostel use.”
While saying that more projects and intervention have been lined up by the set, Alade advised the beneficiaries who were selected by the institution based on their remarkable academic exploits, to be committed to their studies in a bid to graduate in flying colours.
He said: “We recognised the need to give back to the institution from which we had all emerged, that which prepared us so resolutely for the outside world and the job market and today with these scholarship awards, we have come to show our humble appreciation for a rewarding experience.
“We urge meaningful organisations and individuals to collaborate with the state government to ensure speedy infrastructural development of the school for the technological advancement of the nation.”
The vice chancellor, Professor Victor Adeoluwa commended the 1984 alumni set for the gesture and their vision for the institution, adding,” they have made an indelible presence in the campus.”
Adeoluwa, who disclosed that the institution had initiated a programme aimed at reaching out to indigent students so that they do not drop out due to lack of financial resources, urged other alumni to remember their alma mater and give back.
The VC advised the beneficiaries of the scholarship award to see the gesture as an impetus for them to do more on their academics and that in the future they would replicate the same gesture to the coming generation.
