No fewer than eight passengers are feared drowned following a collision involving two speed boats in the Ikang axis of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River.

Cross River State Police Command, which confirmed the incident on Wednesday, said five other passengers were rescued alive with the assistance of local fishermen in Cameroon.

According to the Command, the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, at about 12:14 pm, when a W23 speed boat conveying 13 Nigerian passengers from Ikang towards the Republic of Cameroon through Cameroonian territorial waters collided with another W23 speed boat fitted with a double Yamaha engine around the Tikoro area.

The police said following the collision, eight passengers were feared to have drowned, while the five survivors were rescued by local fishermen in Cameroon.

It added that the bodies of those feared drowned were later brought to Simon Beach, Ikang, in Bakassi LGA.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the Marine Police in Ikang had been directed to ensure that the recovered bodies were properly identified by their respective families before being deposited at the morgue.

He said the Command was liaising with relevant authorities and affected families as efforts continued to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police assured that further information would be made public as soon as verified details become available.
