DETERMINED to tackle the road collapse in Edo State, the government has set up a laboratory where engineers will source for local materials on road construction.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure, Ferguson Enabulele, who disclosed this on Monday, said that the initiative was borne out of the experience gathered from a training programme in South Africa for engineers in the ministry.
Enabulele assured that Governor Godwin Obaseki would soon commission the complex which is situated on the premises of the ministry, as it had been completed and equipped for extensive research.
He said that just like in South Africa, where indigenous materials are used in road construction, the mandate of the laboratory is to fashion indigenous materials for building roads in the state.
He said: “When our engineers got to South Africa for the training, they were amazed at the high standard of the roads without potholes. We were made to understand that local materials are used in road construction there,” he said.
“Based on that experience, the state government decided to set up a standard laboratory here in Benin City where local engineers will be tasked with research on local materials for road construction in the state. We want to tackle the problem of road collapse and potholes.”
Enabulele said that over 100 roads had been earmarked for construction and rehabilitation throughout the state, noting that the state’s roads would wear a new look at the end of the exercise.
He said that the roads would be spread out to all the three senatorial districts in the state, adding that construction work would commence after the rainy season.
