The wife of Ondo State Governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called on Nigerian women across the country not to despair over the rejection of bills seeking gender equality in the country.
Mrs Akeredolu who stated this during the celebration of the 2022 International Women’s Day, held in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday, noted that the rejection of the bill was part of the ugly tendencies against the pro-female bills.
She said “this confirmed our fear that there is a strategic attempt by the male folk to subtly subjugate the women.
“We cannot just wish this away as it may graduate to a suffocating stage if we further hesitate to confront the reactionary attitudes toward women’s rights. Good, we have spoken against the parliamentary injustice in clear and unmistakable terms and we are still speaking.
Mrs Akeredolu who said it was not too late for the lawmakers to make fresh amendments and give women their due which they have paid over the years in the Nigerian political setting, urged women across the country to always stand up to fight against all forms of discrimination against them.
According to her, women in Nigeria experienced different shades of discrimination, battling bigotry and “confronting stubborn patriarchal tendencies in our social transactions.”
She charged women not to relent in their struggle and fight against women’s discrimination saying “We cannot just wish this (discrimination against women) away as it may graduate to a suffocating stage if we further hesitate to confront the reactionary attitudes toward women’s rights.
“Good, we have spoken against the parliamentary injustice in clear and unmistakable terms and we are still speaking.
“As we progress, however, in our march towards emancipation, let us be our sister’s keepers. I call on women across social, religious and political lines to unite in defence of womanhood. We all have roles to play in making sure that the status of women is improved at all fronts.
“We must also not lose sight of the need to strengthen the weak among us and the need to fortify the malleable ones with a competent compass as they navigate the murky socio-political terrain.”
She, however, said as part of activities to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, the womenfolk in the state have decided to celebrate and honour some accomplished women who have grown to comparable statutes in spite of life’s many vicissitudes.
“Women who have defied odds by sheer gifts and guts and emerged consequential in the scheme of things. These are the amazons who have conquered daunting hurdles and attained incredible rungs.
“They are models and worthy ambassadors who should represent the minimum standard for contemporary women”
