A university Don, Prof. Muniratu Maliki, has tasked government tiers and other relevant stakeholders in the country on the need to engage in effective sensitisation on waste management.
Maliki, a Professor of Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at the Edo State University Uzairue made the call while presenting a paper titled: “Economic and Environmental Sustainability Through Dump-Mining” at the 10th inaugural Lecture of the university.
She said the sensitisation would go a long way to address environmental problems as well as improve waste management is the country.
“There is an increasing global campaign to urgently address the issue of waste mismanagement.
“If waste are properly managed, it will maximise their benefit while minimising environmental impacts,” she said.
The Professor who is also the Dean, Students Affairs in the university stated that waste management was a major problem that has affected significant number of people in the country.
She opined that dump-miming is the extraction of useful resources from waste, adding that the process also cover the treatment, management and utilisation of waste for resourceful and profitable purposes.
Prof. Maliki further called for an increase in recycling efforts by Nigerians to reduce the impact of harmful chemicals and the emission of greenhouse gases to help tackle climate change
Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, said the lecture series has been a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence and innovation in academia.
He asserted that knowledge is key to progress and prosperity, saying that as a university, the school would continue to drive economic and environmental sustainability, promote academic excellence and foster a nurturing environment that would empower the students to becoming leaders of tomorrow.
