On Sunday, January 23, Nigeria’s senior football team, the Super Eagles, lost to Tunisia by a neck (0:1) at the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, and failed to enter the quarter-finals.
At the group stage of the tournament, Nigeria was the only team to secure all nine points with three consecutive victories. This was the first time since 2006 that Nigeria had advanced to the knockout stage as a group leader at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria, traditionally a football power in Africa, currently ranks 36 in the world. The team has won the Africa Cup of Nations three times. At the last Africa Cup of Nations, the team reached the semi-finals and won the third place by beating Tunisia. The team has several famous football stars, such as Wilfred Ndidi, a midfielder playing for Leicester City F.C. in the English Premier League and Victor Osimhen who plays for SSC Napoli in Italian Serie A.
Although Nigeria missed the final competition, it still performed well at this Africa Cup of Nations due to its accumulated strength. Chery, together with Nigerian football fans, wish the Nigerian national football team a better performance in future AFCONs and the forthcoming World Cup which we are upbeat the Super Eagles will qualify for.
