The Delta State Government says it would not hesitate to mete out appropriate sanctions on any person caught giving out or receiving any form of financial inducement for the purpose of securing good grades for students of the five campuses of the state owned Colleges of Nursing Sciences during the forthcoming examination.
Such unethical actions, it said, would undermine the integrity of the healthcare profession and put public safety at risk.
The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme made this known during his visit to the Colleges in Warri, Sapele and Eku, where he addressed nursing students preparing for their Preliminary Training Studies (PTS) examination in continuation of sensitization visits to the State Government owned College of Nursing Sciences.
The Commissioner, who was represented by his Special Assistant / Technical Adviser, Dr. Omovigho Agbele said that nursing profession is undoubtedly a highly skilled, respected, and essential profession which has gained prestige over the years, particularly with the rise of specialized roles, leadership positions, and advanced practice nursing and hence in high demand globally.
“It has come to our attention that some persons are asking you for money to help you pass your PTS examinations on the strength that they are from the Ministry of Health, office of the provost, friend to lecturers, and telling you that if you don’t pay you won’t pass. Please don’t yield to them as the government frowns at such,” the Commissioner counselled.
“Your PTS examination is going to be based mainly on merit. It means that whether you pass or fail depends on you.
“So, if you study hard and burn the midnight candle you are going to pass but if you don’t prepare very well you are going to fail as no amount of money that you pay is going to make you pass the coming examination.”
The Commissioner charged the students to focus on their studies as that is what can guarantee them success and promotion to the next level, adding that results would be released on the evening of the last day of their examination.
He therefore urged them to shun every form of examination malpractice which can truncate their educational pursuit as nursing students.
The Commissioner had earlier visited Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Asaba and Agbor.
