Ahead of the governorship election in Delta State in 2023, a leading aspirant, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, has urged the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to present its best candidate with clean hands if it must come tops.
The business mogul said it was possible for the ruling PDP in the state to replicate the resounding victory witnessed in the just concluded Anambra State governorship election in Delta come 2023 if it presented its best candidate.
He made the assertion while addressing the Olorogun Kingsley Esiso-led PDP executive and the State Working Committee (SWC) at the party’s Secretariat in Asaba on Wednesday.
The former Minister of State for Education averred that people of Anambra voted the All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA) governorship candidate, Professor Charles Soludo because he was obviously the best material among other contestants.
“What gave that man victory is other than nothing, but that he is the best material among the lots that presented themselves.
“From 2015 sir, it is no longer the same. While all the people who are there believe they can conduct elections, use the power of government, they have money but something just happened in our neighbouring state, Anambra.
“You saw people in Anambra State for the first time rejecting money for what they believed in.
“You saw people saying ‘no’ to imposition,” he averred, noting that the Delta PDP chairman has a big responsibility on hands.
The industrialist, therefore, called on the party leaders in the state to project someone like him whom, he claimed, has the integrity and character and is not ready to siphon government’s nor taxpayers’ monies for luxury living to the detriment of the masses.
“Be bold because unless you bring your best with clean hands, you will have more difficult problems ahead of you.
“So, I plead with you, as leaders of the party in the state, to come out among all your children, the best, so you have a smooth sail like what just happened in Anambra State,” he pleaded.
He assured them that with him as governor come 2023, he would deliver good governance to Deltans and those yet unborn, promising not to deep hands into the state treasury, but would rather improve on the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.
“I have told God that I don’t need a new house except for the one I am doing here now in Asaba. More importantly, they are all transparent. God has been kind to me, I don’t need all that anymore.
“Sir, I am pleading with you and your members because you will be all collectively involved in this arrangement that is before us. Consider a lot of all of us and a lot of your children yet unborn and choose who can deliver the dividends of democracy to the people without ravaging the economy of the state.
“I will not leave anybody behind, we will all go and do this business,” he pledged.
He charged the party not to make the mistake Nigerians made to have allowed the incursion of APC into the governance of the country.
“In six years, it is now clear to all of us. From our children in primary school to our aged mothers, a good number of them has passed on as a result of hunger,” he lamented.
In his response, the party Chairman, PDP chairman, Esiso, assured him of level playing ground for all aspirants.
“The party executives are neutral and it is our responsibility to provide a level-playing ground for all aspirants, and at the end, only one candidate will emerge to represent the party,” he noted.
