The independent investigative panel on human rights violations by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday summoned the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Garki General Hospital, Abuja and the Registrar, Medical and Dental Practitioners Council to appear before it on December 2.
The panel summoned the two in connection with a petition before it, filed by a lady, Chinenye Igwetu, on the alleged extra-judicial killing of her younger sister, Linda Igwetu by one Inspector Benjamin Peters.
The petitioner had on November 4 told the panel sitting at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Maitama, Abuja that one Inspector Peters shot her younger sister who was then a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member on July 3, 2018, in Abuja, a day before her passing out.
Igwetu listed Inspector Peters, the FCT Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police as respondents in the petition.
When the petition came up for hearing on Monday before the panel, counsel for the respondents, James Idachaba, told the panel that the police were only served the proceedings of November 4 (last Friday).
He added that there was the need to get the Inspector Peters to appear before the panel and as such asked for an adjournment.
He added that the police were ready to assist the panel to achieve its mandate as well as substantial justice, moreover that a life lost was involved in the petition.
Counsel for the panel, China Obiagwu SAN, who appeared for the petitioner, asked the panel to summon the CMD, Garki General Hospital, Abuja and Registrar of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council to appear before it to give evidence in the matter.
While adjourning the matter till Wednesday, December 2, the chairman of the panel, Justice Suleiman Galadima (retd), ordered that summon be served on both the CMD and the Registrar for them to appear before the panel on the adjourned date.
Tribune Online reports that Igwetu had informed that her younger sister was allegedly shot by the said Inspector Peters at the Ceddi Plaza in Abuja when she and her friends were returning from where they went to celebrate her passing out, adding that the late Linda was rushed to the Garki General Hospital, where she later died.
