LOVE, eligibility, intelligence, financial capability and sound health are some of the basic things a man must possess before thinking of going into marriage, the Chief Imam of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Sheikh Mahmun Muhammad-Awwal, has said.

Sheikh Muhammad-Awwal, at the quarterly marriage seminar of the Jama-atul Islamiyyah of Nigeria, Ibadan, Oyo State branch, held recently in Ibadan, described these requirements as antidotes to the challenges experienced by couples in their marital journeys.

The cleric, who spoke on the theme ‘The Concept of Marriage in Islam’, said that the Muslim man must satisfy these conditions before he could be regarded as eligible for marriage.

According to him, the Shariah also stipulates neatness, good cooking skills, among others, as attributes the Muslim lady must possess before she can be deemed qualified to get married.

Sheikh Muhammad-Awwal noted that a good Muslim woman should constantly give her husband good advice and rise above anger and other forms of unpleasantness in the event her husband takes a second wife.

In a second sermon, the Chief Imam of Adegbayi, Alhaji Abdul Muhaymin Kareem Adegbayi, identified compatibility of the couple as a basic requirement for marriage in Islam.

Citing Qur’an Chapter 4, verse 22-24, Alhaji Adegbayi explained the kind of woman an eligible Muslim man should desire to get married to.

The cleric condemned the idea of parents imposing spouses on their children, stressing that mutual understanding by the intending couple is one of the keys to having a blissful marital life.

He stated that the dowry paid by the groom is solely meant for the bride and underscored the need for parents to ensure that the right clerics are invited to perform the marriage ceremony.
