Taiwo, in her claim, alleged that Hassan had failed in his responsibilities as husband and father. She thus urged the court to terminate their union and grant her custody of their three children.
“I moved out of my husband’s house seven years ago because he neglected me and our children.
“He shifted his responsibility as breadwinner to me. He wasn’t bothered how the children and I fared or survived. I was responsible for their feeding, clothing and education because my husband just didn’t care.
“As a result of his neglect, one of our children who was then in his custody died during a sickness and this widened the gap in our relationship.
“We got married as Muslims, but I changed my faith and became a Christian along the way. He wasn’t pleased with this and gave me hell any time I went to church. I insisted I wasn’t going to renounce my new faith because I receive succor and derive joy in it, “she told the court.
Hassan agreed to divorce, but prayed the court to grant him custody of their children.
“My wife is not trustworthy. She was fond of lying about her movements and activities while still with me.
“She was wayward and always dating different men. She would leave the children at home and follow after her lovers and would not return until late in the night.
“She changed her faith to that of Christianity which I frown upon. I insisted she must change to her former religion which is Islamic because I married her as a Muslim, but she turned deaf ears to me.
“This brought about a friction in our relationship which made her move out of my house, “the defendant told the court.
Listening to the duo, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade observed that the love between them have waned.
Ruling, he terminated their marriage and awarded custody of their children to the defendant.
