Careless refuse burning has led to a fire disaster in an ancient central market in Oro town, Irepodun local government area of Kwara State, late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
The Tribune Online gathered from the State Fire Service operatives, who were on ground to curtail the fire, that the inferno was caused by “careless refuse burning near the market by an unknown person which spread to a shop and later escalated to many other shops in the market.”
It was gathered that over 30 shops were consumed by the fire out of the 354 shops in the central market.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who visited the scene, on Tuesday, commiserated with traders who lost properties in the fire incident.
The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, who said that the effect of the fire was huge, however, said that “our firemen were able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and in no time the ravaging inferno was totally extinguished.
“Out of the 354 shops in the market area, 30 shops were consumed by the fire, and the other remaining ones were rescued by the firemen.”
According to our officers present at the scene, the inferno was caused due to the careless refuse burning by one unknown person, which spread out to a shop, and later escalated to many other shops in that vicinity area.”
Prince Falade charged members of the public on the fire safety responsibility in order to reduce incessant fire outbreaks that had been on the increase in the state.
