My son who is attending a very high brow school came home on holidays with complaints of body itching which is worse at night. The attending doctor diagnosed scabies but I disagreed since scabies is said to be the disease of poor and dirty people. Can this be scabies?

Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows. The urge to scratch may be especially strong at night. Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through close physical contact in a family, child care group, school class, nursing home or prison. This is why a high level of hygiene should be maintained in these kinds of environments. Also, because scabies is very contagious, doctors often recommend treatment for entire families or contact groups.
