The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Sagir Abbas, announced that a total of 8,769 students will be graduating, with 176 students earning first-class degrees, at the 39th convocation ceremony scheduled to take place from Wednesday to Saturday in February 2025.
Also, the convocation will honour three distinguished retired professors with the title of Emeritus Professor: Professor Garba Azare, Professor Julius Falola, and Professor Musa Borodo.
Professor Abbas explained that the convocation ceremony will be staggered over these four days, with specific faculties holding their graduation ceremonies on designated days.
Furthermore, he revealed that two notable individuals, Colonel (Retd) Sani Bello, a former governor of Kano State, and Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, a prominent businessman, will be awarded honorary degrees on the final day of the ceremony.
According to him, “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, It is with great pleasure that Bayero University Kano (BUK) announces the details of its 39th Convocation Ceremony.”
He added, “This event marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of our students, and we are excited to celebrate their achievements with you.”
Professor Abbas while given the breakdown of the programme, said on day 1, Wednesday 12 February, we will have a total of 4,402 graduands receiving their degrees, diplomas, and certificates. from 11 faculties.
While on day 2, Thursday, 13 February, “We shall see another 4,367 graduands from 7 faculties graduating. The highlights include: -176 First Class degrees – 275 PhDs -2,590 Masters Degrees -535 Postgraduate Diplomas.
The title of the lecture is: Innovation and Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to National Development. The Chairman of the Convocation Lecture is the Hon. Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Jeffrey Nnaji.
He then emphasised that on day 4, on the final day, we will confer Honorary Degrees on two distinguished Nigerians: – Col. Sani Bello (Rtd) – Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, popularly known as A A Rano.
Prof. Abbas, however, disclosed that the BUK does not give an honorary degree on the basis of selling it but strictly based on the contribution of such personalities of people to humanity and to the educational sector.
He mentioned that Col. Belo, a former governor of Kano State, greatly contributed to the socio-economic development of the state during his tenure.
Additionally, it is on record that Alhaji A. A. Rano assisted a significant number of students by paying their registration fees and has continued to provide financial support of N60,000 to many students.
Also, no fewer than 7,000 were receiving salary from A A Rano, all these are qualities the BUK is looking into as a criterion for awarding him.
