DR Juliet Ochi, a Pediatric doctor with Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), says breast milk provides right proportion of essential nutrients for baby’s body and brain development.
Ochi stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Saturday.
She said that breast milk should be given to babies immediately they were born, adding that breastfed babies normally to ensure ”wealth of medical benefits.”
The paediatrician further said that the essential nutrients in the breast milk include vitamins, proteins, fats, antibodies.
According to her, Breast milk is a perfect food, adding that it is easy to digest because it is made of live cells and the baby’s bodies can easily absorb it.
Ochi stated that breastfeeding ensured the “best possible health”, “best developmental and psychosocial outcomes” for infants.
She said that breastfed babies hardly fall sick, have a lower risk of obesity as well as type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
“They also have a reduced risk for ear infections (otitis media) and gastroenteritis among others,” she said.
