Bauchi State House of Assembly Committee on Education has affirmed the commitment of the 10th Assembly under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman to the development of education in the State.
The affirmation was made by the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala during a meeting held alongside some stakeholders in education with the Director, Education Division, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in Nigeria, Abuja to strategize on educational development in Bauchi State and oversight functions.
Speaking during the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee assured USAID and its LEARN to Read Project team that as representatives of the people they are ready to provide them with whichever legislative support they may require for the project to succeed in Bauchi State.
Nasiru Ahmed Ala however requested the USAID and its LEARN to Read Project to support the State House of Assembly to develop a checklist that will be used in monitoring the activities of Basic Education and Ministry of Education during oversight functions.
In his remarks, the Commissioner, Bauchi State Ministry of Budget and Planning, Alh. Aminu Hammayo stated that the Executive arm of government has a primary role in discharging its responsibilities to all sectors.
He thus said that the Government will make commitments with regards to Mutual Accountability Account (MAA), which is imperative for its relevance and sustainability, assuring that it will be taken to the level of State Executive Council and facilitate its approval.
Also speaking, the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu who was represented by the Dan-Kaden Bauchi, Alh. Aminu Yakubu Mahmud pledged to support advocacy to engage parents on the need for education.
After conveying all the messages to the Emir who happened to be the Chairman Education Steering committee in the State, saying the Emir is passionate about education at the foundation level and interested in seeing every child in the State nurtured with literacy and numeracy skills.
In their responses, the Office Director, USAID Education Mission, Jana Wooden and her Deputy, Mariam Britel-Swift appreciated the calibre of people gathered and the type of skills they possessed.
While lamenting that the system of education in Nigeria is not easy with the number of States and expectations, they promised to strengthen the relationship with Bauchi State to address its problems and help in achieving its educational goals and development as contained in a statement by Abdul Ahmad Burra, Spokesperson to the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly.
