THE Old Students Association of Awe High School, Awe, Oyo State, has been commended for partnering with the state government in its determination to transform and reposition the education sector for higher standards.
The commendation was given by the permanent secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs A.B. Atere, during the commissioning of the renovated facilities in the school namely, six blocks of classrooms, four offices, four toilets financed by Dr Lawrence Debo Alonge of 1964 set, 4 blocks of classrooms by the 1981 set and presentation of first batch of 120 sets of school desks and chairs by 1980 set of the old students.
The permanent secretary said the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration, through the Ministry of Education, is coordinating and involving school governing boards, old students and parents associations in the management of public secondary schools which is in tandem with global best practices.
She maintained that the state government places high premium on quality education which informed the decision to allocate the 24 per cent of the state’s budget to education to address the issue of inadequate funding of the sector.
While noting that the government had increased access to basic education through its free education policy, Mrs Atere called on other stakeholders such as corporate and non-governmental organisations, community leaders and philanthropists to emulate the old students.
Earlier in her welcome address, the school principal, Mrs Francisca Iyabode Oladipo, appreciated the old students for allowing God to use them for the progress and development of their alma mater, adding that their contributions in terms of resources and time had made teaching and learning more conducive in the school.
In his comments, the president of the old students, Dr Sina Adekambi, who described the old students as men of honour and virtue, also lauded them for their focus and determination in ensuring that the task of giving the school a new look was carried out in good time.
He enjoined the teachers and students to continue to uphold the motto of the school by making virtue their pillar.
