Suspected armed men last Sunday attacked residence of aged mother of an Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) chieftain, Hon. Segun Karunwi, located at Olatunji Ayinla street, Wasimi, Abeokuta in Ogun.

It was gathered that the assailants reportedly broke down the main entrance door and two windows of the building through which they gained entrance into the house.

However, it was discovered that no item was taken away from the residence by the assailants.

It was gathered that the aged woman, in her late 80s, was absent at home, as she was said to have gone to church few hours before the attack.

It was also gathered that the development had caused apprehension in the area and its environs as some residents are contemplating relocating from the community.

Hon. Karunwi, popularly called “Baba Odua,” a prominent member of Chief Fasheun’s faction of OPC from Kosija Zone in Wasimi, Ewekoro local government area of the state, was one of the Special Assistants to the former governor of Kwara state, Dr. Bukola Saraki, while serving as governor.

Reacting to the development, Karunwi who is currently residing in the United States of America (USA), condemned the current security situation in the area, Ogun state in particular, and across the country, urging Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give serious attention to protection of lives and property to avoid loss of innocent lives by criminals.

“If not that my mother was not at home, she would have been dead or kidnapped by now.

“I, therefore, call on Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deploy more logistics to security in Ogun state and across the country respectively. I’m referring to increase in human resources and security equipment.

“The Ogun state and federal governments should also increase surveillance in the trouble areas, so that evil minded people would not have opportunities to carry out their nefarious agenda”.

The Inspector General of OPC, Chief Adewale Sodiq, who commended efforts of Hon. Karunwi to the group also condemned the development, urging Ogun state and federal governments to step up actions in ensuring adequate protection of lives and property in the state and across the country.

Also, Baale of Erube, Chief Ismaila Ibikunle, who condemned the attack, described it as assault on the community. He called on the state government to come to their aide, to ensure that residents do not desert their homes.

The community leader also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure adequate protection of lives and property of innocent citizens of Nigeria as promised while taking oath as President of Nigeria.
