ASUU FUTO awards scholarship to 8 indigent students, honours retirees

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), has awarded scholarship to eight indigent students of the institution and equally honoured some retirees of the university.

The successful students were selected from among the 77 applicants who were interviewed by a committee set up by the ASUU leadership.

The awardees included Uzoma Onyekachi with 69.6 per cent score from the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), Onyeibe Anayo, School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) who scored 77 per cent.

Others were Ojioha Chibuike of the School of SIET, Ubaegbulam Vivian, School of Management and Applied Technology (SMAT), Felix Favour, SOBS, Amadi Maurice, SOES and Anyanwu Sandra, SOES.

In his valedictory speech at the ceremony held at the university, the chairman of ASUU, FUTO, Dr Christopher Echereobia said that the committee also recommended a 400 level indigent student of Mathematical Engineering Department, Bernard Lucky Ekene, an orphan  with CGPA of 4.35 for the ASUU’s national award.

He said that the union during the event also honoured some retirees of the institution in appreciation of their  services and contributions to the growth and development of the institution.

Echereobia, an associate professor, said the essence of the event which was to appreciate the retirees for their selfless services and contributions to the growth and development of the institution.

While he expressed joy at the undiluted support of his executives since assumption of office, the ASUU boss appreciated the executives, stressing that they had done well.

He noted that during his time as the ASUU chairman, the usual befitting burial given to their deceased members was pushed up from N250, 000 to N500,000.

Dr Ezlchereobia regretted that the association did not do well in the area of adequately appreciating the retirees due to financial constraint.

He then appealed to the incoming ASUU executives to pay special attention to the retirees in recognition of their services to the university.

Among the retirees honoured at the event were the former vice chancellor of FUTO, Professor Jude Njoku; deputy vice chancellor, Academic, Chief A.B.I. Udebibia, among others.
