Amidst the public outcry against the proposed amendment of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission Act, Managers of Information of All Progressives Congress (APC) Governments at Federal and State Levels, have advocated for what they called “Strengthened legislation, strategies and action plans with consequences for media abuse and misinformation.”
This formed part of the recommendations of the forum at its inaugural meeting hosted by Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which held in Lagos.
In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman they expressed concern over narratives in the public space which they noted was skewed against the APC government at all levels.
The new forum decried the disconnect between the citizenry and the government which it further noted was responsible for subsisting negative perception and distrust.
Other recommendations to mitigate the negative narratives in the media read in part: “Increased commitment towards improving media and public engagement with necessary feedbacks through enhancing the relationship with the populace and incorporating the necessary media plan and strategy to drive each policy and programme.
“Sustained efforts to plan and implement media engagement strategies and programmes that will be sustainable and resilient to the impacts of media attacks by the opposition and their collaborators within and outside Nigeria, and the misinformation and media abuse associated with it.
“Concerted engagement with critical media stakeholders and practitioners to have a strong and well-coordinated presence in the media space by ensuring appropriate synergy between Federal and State Ministries, Agencies and Departments, Local Governments, development partners, the civil society partners, and the private sector.
“Strengthened advocacy to amplify justifications of government policies and popularise government achievements across the board.
“Agreed to meet quarterly to review progress and also build solidarity amongst managers of information at all levels in APC-Led governments under the leadership of Alh. Lai Mohammed, Honourable Minister of Information and Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari.”
Amongst those in attendance at the sessions were Kebbi state governor and Chairman of the PGF, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; his Lagos State counterpart and host governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Minister of Information and Orientation, Lai Mohammed and Senior Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media, Mr Femi Adesina and Special Adviser to Vice President on Information, Mr Laolu Akande.
