Suspension: Group condemns Natasha’s approach in seeking redress

The Diaspora Council of Nigerian Youths (DCNY) has criticised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s approach in seeking redress over her suspension from the Senate, describing it as damaging to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The Council raised its concerns during an emergency meeting held at the Congress Hotel in Chicago, where representatives from various countries gathered to deliberate on the controversy surrounding the senator’s recent suspension by the Nigerian Senate.

Speaking at the meeting, the Convener and President of the DCNY, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, expressed the displeasure of Nigerian youths in the diaspora over what he described as the senator’s sensational handling of the issue.

“We express our profound displeasure over the sensationalism that has characterized Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public statements,” he said. “Her willful violation of Senate rules regarding sitting arrangements is the reason for her suspension, not her unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment.”

The group accused the senator of engaging in what it called a “global campaign” aimed at discrediting the Nigerian Senate and, by extension, the country’s democratic framework. According to the Council, her media engagements and remarks to international organisations, where she described Nigeria as a lawless country, have triggered outrage among Nigerians living abroad.

“Her rhetoric not only misrepresents the reality but also damages the collective image of Nigerians both at home and abroad,” Gbadebo added.

The DCNY warned that such negative portrayals have far-reaching consequences, particularly as Nigerians across the world already contend with increasing scrutiny, visa restrictions, and discrimination fuelled by negative stereotypes.

“Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reckless statements reinforce false perceptions about Nigeria, making life even more challenging for our citizens abroad,” noted Dr Festus Danjuma, Publicity Secretary of the DCNY.

The group urged the senator to cease her public outbursts and instead follow due process through Nigeria’s judicial system if she believes her suspension was unjust.

“If she truly believes in democracy, she must allow the institutions she claims to serve to address her grievances,” it said.

Emphasising the need for restraint and responsibility in public office, the Council reminded Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan that lawmakers are expected to demonstrate decorum and diplomacy in their conduct.

“Her current path of sensationalism and self-victimisation is unbecoming of a lawmaker. If she represents the people, she must prioritise Nigeria’s interests over her personal ambitions,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its commitment to defending Nigeria’s democratic values, the DCNY called on Nigerians at home and abroad to reject any actions that could undermine the country’s reputation.

“Nigeria is bigger than any individual. We urge Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to halt her destructive actions, seek reconciliation, and act in a manner befitting a public servant,” the Council stated.
