SPECIAL Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Education, Science and Technology, Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi has emphasized the need for management of schools to commit themselves to training their teachers and other members of staff on school safety.

Akin-Alabi’s call, on Wednesday, stemmed from incidences of students who are victims of accidents in class and around school premises attributable to poor class control and behaviour management.

Akin-Alabi who spoke at a seminar for teachers, heads of schools and other school staff in Oyo State, held at State Secretariat, Ibadan, decried that many students had died owing to the inability of some teachers to apply first aid measures when certain accidents occur in schools.

She consequently noted that it was high time management of schools equipped their teaching and non-teaching staff to be more safety conscious, mandating them not to overlook incidents in class that constitute dangers to students.

In her presentation, School Safety Administrator for the Oyo State Model Education System Interventions (OYOMESI), Ms Enuka Umeike emphasized the need for schools to prevent avoidable risks, raise general safety awareness and protect pupils from harm.

Umeike noted that students will be safer in schools if teachers prioritize and institutionalize the issue of safety in schools.

The seminar also saw presentations where the huge role of school heads and School Governing Boards in improving teaching and learning in schools, through requisite training for teachers, was identified.
