For many Nigerian homes and businesses, generators are an important backup when electricity supply fails. But like any machine, a generator needs regular maintenance to remain reliable.

Neglecting basic servicing can lead to difficult starting, overheating, poor performance and expensive repairs. Simple maintenance can help your generator work better and last longer.

In this article, Tribune Online outlines the ultimate standby generator maintenance blueprint

Check the engine oil regularly

Engine oil keeps the moving parts of the engine lubricated and reduces  friction. Running a generator with low or old oil can cause serious  damage to the engine. Check the oil level regularly and change it according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. Do not assume that every generator requires an oil change after the same number of hours because maintenance intervals vary between models.

Clean or replace the air filter

A generator needs clean air to run properly. A dirty air filter can reduce  airflow and affect engine performance. Check the filter during routine servicing and clean or replace it when necessary. Generators used in dusty environments may require more frequent attention.

Check the fuel system

Poor-quality, contaminated or old fuel can cause starting problems and affect engine performance. Inspect fuel lines and connections regularly for leaks. If you notice a fuel leak or strong fuel smell, switch off the generator and have it checked by a qualified technician.

Keep the generator protected from rain

Generators should be protected from direct rain, but they must still have enough ventilation.

Do not operate a fuel-powered generator inside a room, garage or other enclosed space. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. If the generator is outdoors, use a properly designed weather shelter that does not block airflow or exhaust.

Check the battery

If your generator uses an electric starter, a weak battery can prevent it from starting when electricity goes off. Check the battery and its terminals during routine maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and replacement.

Check the coolant

Liquid-cooled generators need adequate coolant  to prevent overheating. Check the coolant level according to the manufacturer’s instructions and inspect the cooling system during servicing. This is especially important when the generator runs for long periods.

Keep the generator clean

Dust, leaves and other debris can collect around the generator and block ventilation openings. Regularly clean the surrounding area and remove anything that could interfere with airflow. Do not allow grass, rubbish or other materials to accumulate around the machine.

Avoid overloading the generator

Every generator has a maximum electrical capacity. Connecting too many appliances can overload the machine. Know your generator’s rated capacity before connecting appliances.

Pay attention to equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, water pumps and air conditioners because some appliances require extra power when starting. A properly installed changeover or transfer switch should be used when connecting a generator to household electrical wiring.

Keep track of running hours

Do not wait for the generator to develop a fault before servicing it. Keep a record of how many hours the generator has operated and follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual. Different generators have different servicing intervals, so there is no single oil-change or servicing period that applies to every model.
