Traveling to another country can be an exciting experience, but before you pack your bags, it is important to ensure you are in good health. Many countries require specific medical tests before granting visas, while others recommend health screenings to prevent illnesses during travel. Getting these tests done will not only protect your health but also help you meet entry requirements. Here are some essential medical tests you must take before travelling.
1. COVID-19 Test
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many countries have made COVID-19 tests mandatory before entry. Depending on the country, you may need a PCR test taken within 24–72 hours before departure. Some places also require proof of vaccination. The United States, Japan, and Australia, among others, require this test.
2. Yellow Fever Vaccination
Countries in Africa and South America require proof of yellow fever vaccination before allowing travelers entry. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends getting vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. You may need to present an International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card) at immigration. Countries, such as Brazil, Uganda, and Ghana require this test.

4. Hepatitis A and B Screening
Some countries require travelers to take hepatitis A and B tests, especially for long-term visits, work, or study visas. These viruses can cause liver infections and may be a concern for public health. To travel to countries such as India, China, and Egypt, you would need to take this test.
5. HIV/AIDS Test
Certain countries in the Middle East and Asia require an HIV test before issuing visas, especially for work permits. Knowing your status is also crucial for personal health and well-being. Countries, such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Russia require this test.
6. Polio Vaccination
Polio is a viral disease that can cause paralysis. While eradicated in many countries, it remains a concern in some regions. Proof of polio vaccination may be required for travelers from or to affected areas. Countries, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria require this test.
7. Typhoid Vaccination
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. Vaccination is advised for travelers to areas with poor sanitation. Bangladesh, Peru, and Indonesia are among the countries which require this test.
8. Meningitis Vaccination
If you are traveling to countries like Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, you must take the meningitis vaccine and present proof before entry. Some other countries that require this are Nigeria and Ethiopia.
