Your armpit smells because of the sweat mixed with bacteria on your skin. It is at puberty stage that armpit smell becomes stronger or noticeable.

However, treatment for a smelly armpit depends on the severity. Definitely deodorants can help to reduce armpit odour; if not effective, then you need to consult a doctor to prescribe what is suitable for you.

Here are possible reasons your armpit smell:

Armpit hair

Unshaved armpit hair can trap sweat and bacteria, leading to unpleasant odour. When sweat comes into contact with bacteria, it produces the smell. To prevent this, it is important to shave regularly and use appropriate deodorants, such as roll-ons or antiperspirants.

Bacteria

Armpit odour occurs because bacteria naturally live in that area. Over time, an unchecked or excessive growth of bacteria can affect how your body smells. This does not happen overnight. Changing your body wash or soap, and maintaining proper hygiene, may help reduce bacteria-induced odour.

Skin infections

Your armpit could be smelling due to skin infection. The hair follicles in your underarm allow bacteria and cause ingrown hair which could be filled with pus. The ingrown hair has to heal in order for you to get rid of the smell completely.

Medications

The new medication you’re taking could be the reason your armpit keeps smelling. Some drugs can cause excessive sweating which makes odour noticeable. Some of these medications are insulin, omeprazole, albuterol and so on.

Diet

Certain foods and beverages can affect how your armpits smell. Spicy foods, red meat, caffeine, onions, garlic, and alcohol are known to contribute to body odour. These foods are high in sulphur compounds, which can be released through sweat and produce a noticeable scent.

Health conditions

Certain health conditions or diseases can cause awful odour regardless of how well you wash. This includes hyperthyroidism, gout, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes and so on. Some of these conditions can increase the rate you sweat and make you smell bad even with good hygiene.
