Power banks have become an everyday necessity for many Nigerians, especially in areas where electricity supply is unreliable. They provide a convenient way to keep smartphones, tablets and other portable devices powered throughout the day.

However, not every power bank on the market delivers the performance it promises. Some have exaggerated battery capacities, while others lack important safety features that protect your devices.

In this article, Tribune Online highlights five important things to know before buying a power bank

Battery capacity matters

One of the first things to check is the battery capacity, which is measured in milliampere-hours (mAh). A higher capacity allows the power bank to store more energy  and charge your devices more times before it needs to be recharged. For light everyday use, a 10,000mAh power bank is often sufficient. If you use it frequently or charge multiple devices, a 20,000mAh model may be a better choice.

Buy from trusted manufacturer

The brand you choose can make a significant difference in quality and safety. Reputable manufacturers are more likely to use high-quality battery cells and include protection against overheating, overcharging and short circuits.

Counterfeit or poorly made power banks may cost less, but they often have lower performance and can pose safety risks.

Check for charging speed

A large battery capacity is useful, but charging speed is equally important. If your smartphone supports fast charging, look for a power bank that offers features such as USB Power Delivery  (USB PD) or Quick Charge. Also pay attention to the output rating, usually measured in watts (W). A higher output enables compatible devices to charge more quickly.

Make sure it has the right ports

Before buying a power bank, confirm that it supports your devices. Many newer smartphones use USB-C, while some older models still require USB-A or Micro-USB cables. If you regularly charge more than one device, consider a power bank with multiple output ports. This allows you to charge two or more devices at the same time without carrying additional accessories.

Consider its size and portability

Power banks come in different shapes and sizes. While larger models usually offer more battery capacity, they are also heavier and take up more space in a bag or pocket.

If you mainly need a backup charger for daily use, a compact model may be more practical. On the other hand, if you spend long hours away from electricity or travel frequently to areas with epileptic power supply, a larger power bank may be worth the extra weight.
