In the annals of history, the year 1759 signifies various events and milestones, depending on one’s perspective. But on a cloudy evening at the Leadership Center in Abai, Aba, Abia State, Eastern Nigeria, 1759 took on a new meaning – it became the title of a theatrical spectacle that captivated audiences.
The brainchild of the talented Precious Okpala, known as “The Happy Director,” 1759: A Musical Journey unfolded on stage like a mesmerizing spectacle, with elements of drama, romance, and intrigue.
Students to families, civil servants to theatre enthusiasts, the audience gathered in anticipation of an unforgettable experience.
At the heart of the narrative was Prince, a thirty-two-year-old Afrobeat sensation from Nigeria, portrayed by Precious Okpala himself. Prince’s journey of self-discovery and redemption began with a surprised unpleasant reunion with his estranged mother, portrayed by the captivating Favour Christopher, on a televised program.
Haunted by the scars of his mother’s abandonment, Prince’s world is shattered by a tragic accident that transports him back in time to Wonderland in 1759- a realm of enchantment and mystery. It is here that he encounters Kiara, the ethereal princess and daughter of King Ramseyz, portrayed with grace by Okezie Favour Chidinma.
Despite their initial clash of personalities, Prince finds himself drawn to Kiara’s inner beauty and strength. Yet, their romance is threatened by the revelation that Princess Kiara does not trust men and harbours unforgiveness to her father, she refuses everyman, king or warrior.
With his only hope of escape from wonderland lying in winning Kiara’s heart. Prince becomes ensnared in a web of deceit and treachery when he is falsely accused of King Ramseyz’s murder, Kiara’s own father.
With time running out, Prince must navigate the landscape of Wonderland, clear his name, and prove his innocence. The ensemble cast, comprised of singers, dancers and actors alike, delivered performances of intensity, each member of the cast breathed life into their characters, immersing the audience in a world of intrigue and romance.
The production team’s attention to detail was evident in various aspects of its execution, especially, from the lavish costumes that paid homage to various historical epochs, costumes designed by Abaz Ifreke, Kenny Edmonds, Beadino Kingstand and Nancy Mentor to the intricate set design (backdrops) designed by Wisdom Emmanuel, Valentine Ojochegbe Onogu, James Abraham Ikechukwu, this team brought Wonderland to life, and every element served to enhance the story.
Precious Okpala and his team have crafted a masterpiece that resonates with audiences on a distinct level. As the final curtain falls and the applause fades into the night, one thing remains abundantly clear – 1759: A Musical Journey is not merely a play; it is a moving artistic exercise that will linger in the hearts and minds of all who have had the privilege of experiencing it.
