UPDATE: Yoruba actress, Moji Olaiya, is dead

Popular Yoruba actress, Moji Olaiya, is dead.

The actress died in a Canadian hospital early Thursday morning where she had gone to deliver her second child.

Tribune Online gathered that Olaiya died of complications arising from child delivery.

It was gathered that days after the delivery of her new baby, she fell ill and was asked to remain at the hospital, where she later died.

Olaiya was raised by veteran jazz singer, Victor Olaiya.

She was said to have adopted the name Olaiya to honour the musician who raised her since she was young.

A source close to the late actress confirmed to Tribune Online that Olaiya could not raise enough money for her treatment before she died.

The actress was said to have died in Canada about two months of being delivered of a baby girl.

It was said she suffered complications after child birth and could have been the cause of her death, another source claimed the Nollywood actress suffered a cardiac arrest early Thursday morning.

Though the family is yet to make official statement, colleagues and friends of the actress have taken to various social media platforms to mourn her untimely demise.

Her last post on Instagram was less than 24 hours ago.

It read, “Allhamdulilahi to you Allah I give all the glory for all you have done. I will forever praise and worship you. It’s not by power but the Grace of Allah. Thank you for the gift of life. Thanks also to all my friends and family my fans for your supports and prayers. Love you all.”

Moji was barely 42 years. Her first child turned 18 recently.

The No Pain No Gain actor was the daughter of legendary Nigerian highlife virtuoso, Victor Olaiya.

Multiple sources including a conversation with Saidi Balogun conjecture that she may have died of complications after child delivery.

She was delivered of her second child in Canada a few months after she parted ways with her first husband.

She was previously married to Bayo Okesola.

The news of her death is coming just when the industry lost two of its popular actors, Olumide Bakare, and Pastor Ajidara, a few weeks apart.

Moji began her acting career with Wale Adenuga’s production, Super Story, and starred in several Nollywood movies and Yoruba films.

She is best known for her roles in films such as No Pains No Gains, in which she played Ireti, Sade Blade (2005), Nkan adun (2008) and Omo iya meta leyi (2009). She also starred in the Agunbaniro.

In 2003 she was nominated for the Reel Award Best Supporting Actress of the Year, and she won the Best New Actress Award.

In 2016 she released a film, Iya Okomi, starring Foluke Daramola and Funsho Adeolu which was scheduled to premiere in Lagos on July.
