The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has given owners of abandoned and submerged vessels constituting wrecks within the jurisdiction of the Federal Navigable Waterways of Lagos two weeks to evacuate them or risk having them evacuated by the agency.
According to a public notice signed by the agency’s management, the NIWA stated that, “The management of NIWA wishes to inform members of the public and owners of submerged and partially submerged vessels within the jurisdiction of the Federal Navigable waterways of Lagos, Nigeria, to come with documents of proof of ownership along with plan for removal within two weeks of this publication to the Lagos area office of NIWA, otherwise in the interest of navigation, the authority shall cause the wrecks to be removed in full compliance with the powers and functions granted it under NIWA establishment Act CAP N47LFN 2004.”
According to findings, some of the wrecks affected by the public notice publication are located in Igbo-Elejo village, Onisiwo village, Aloro village, Kirikiri waters by Bakare jetty, Ijegun waters, Atlas cove, Marine police jetty, and other locations in Ajah.
