World’s oldest living person dies at 117

Maria Branyas Morera, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, has died at the age of 117.

Born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco, California, she later moved to Spain with her family at the age of 8.

Branyas lived in a nursing home in northeastern Spain for the last two decades and was known for her kindness and wisdom. Her family attributed her longevity to genetics.

In a social media post, her family announced her passing, stating that she died peacefully in her sleep, without pain, as she had wished. They remembered her for her advice and kindness.

Branyas was recognised as the world’s oldest person in January 2023, following the death of French nun Lucile Randon, aged 118.

“Maria Branyas has left us. She died as she wished: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain,” her family wrote via Maria’s account on social network X.

“We will always remember her for her advice and her kindness,” they said.
