Senator Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South senatorial district and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, has justified the swift confirmation of the Service Chiefs by the Senate.
The four Service Chiefs were screened during a closed-door session of the Senate, and their confirmation was announced after the executive session.
The list included Major General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, Major T. A. Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Ikechukwu Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal H.B. Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had formally requested the confirmation of the Service Chiefs in a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking to journalists after the Senate plenary, Senator Adaramodu emphasized the importance of granting the confirmation request expeditiously, considering the nation’s security challenges.
He stated, “We know that today one topical issue raging is internal security. Anything that is going to add on and ensure that Nigerians can be safe, people can go to their farm unfettered, we have to cooperate with Mr President on that to ensure that we have a seamless security architecture to stamp out insecurity.”
He further explained that the Senate assessed the antecedents, profiles, abilities, and personalities of the nominees and found them to be capable individuals who could address the nation’s security concerns.
Regarding the absence of the Inspector General of Police during the screening, Senator Adaramodu clarified that it was not mandatory for all nominees to appear for screening and confirmation on the same day.
Senator Adaramodu also addressed the approval of the $800 million grant from the World Bank for the National Social Safety Net Programme (NSSNP).
He clarified that it was not a borrowing but a facility that had been on the ground before, during the tail end of the Buhari administration.
He emphasized that the funds were meant to provide a safety net for many Nigerians and were legislated upon based on the opinion of Nigerians.
