Malam Jibrin Ndace, Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has shed light on the reasons behind the poor treatment of Nigerian passport holders abroad.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Mr Peter Odey, Deputy Governor of Cross River, Ndace highlighted the impact of negative narratives on Nigeria’s international image.
In his address on Thursday in Calabar, Ndace emphasised that the widespread disdain faced by Nigerian passport holders is directly linked to the negative stories and distortions about Nigeria that are propagated both locally and internationally.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to actively and unapologetically share positive stories about the country to counteract the damaging effects of misinformation.
“Our country is not solely defined by negative news; we have many positive stories that deserve to be told,” Ndace stated.
“When Nigerians travel abroad with their passports, they are often treated with disdain, which is a result of the negative portrayals of our nation. This treatment is unacceptable and must be addressed.”
Ndace also praised the ongoing cooperation between the VON and the Cross River State Government, offering the platform to publicise the state’s developmental programmes and initiatives.
He underlined the importance of collaboration in showcasing the positive aspects of Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
In response, Deputy Governor Peter Odey commended Ndace for his professional leadership, which he said has enhanced the global standing of VON.
Odey assured that the Cross River State Government would actively work with VON to promote its tourism and cultural events, including the renowned Carnival Calabar.
“The Cross River Government, through the Commissioner for Information, will partner with VON to publicise our activities and highlight the state’s unique offerings to the world,” Odey affirmed.
“We look forward to VON’s involvement in covering our flagship events and other significant programmes under the Prince Otu administration.”
