Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has publicly declared himself as a “Biafran,” explaining the reason every Igbo person falls under that identity.
He claimed that Biafra is an ethnographical region, similar to Arewa and Oduduwa, rather than a separatist identity.
Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga 89.9 FM, Lagos, the singer expressed his view: “As far as I am concerned, every Igbo man under the sun today is a Biafran. I am a Biafran. I am an Igbo man and Biafra is where we are from. It is just like the Arewas and Oduduwas.”
Kcee went further to explain the historical context, stating, “Biafra was created in 1967. Frank Opigo from Bayelsa suggested that name for the Igbos and we adopted it in 1967. Before 1967, who are we? Igbos. Being Igbo means you are still a Biafran.”
This historical context highlights Kcee’s effort to root the Biafran identity in cultural and geographical heritage—the Igbo homeland—which he insists predates the political conflict, thus making the term a non-controversial fact of regional identity.
His statement places him in the middle of a national debate, attempting to acknowledge the powerful, widespread sense of a distinct Igbo identity while maintaining a non-separatist, cultural position.
