Making this call at the maiden investiture and induction ceremony of the Business Process Management Institute in Lagos, recently, the Vice President of the Institute and convener of the event, Mr. Adebowale Adebayo, argued that lack of business process management-related knowledge had continued to take its tolls on businesses in the country.
He noted that besides a few multinationals that had imbibed the culture of business process management, due to its value-adding nature, other businesses that had business process management centre, simply adopted it due to the insistence of the regulatory authorities, in those fields.
“If the average SME was aware of what business process management is, and what value it can add to strengthen their business operations, aiding growth and giving competitive advantage, there would be more structured start-ups, competing favourably both locally and on the global stage.
“Some businesses could have been running for quite a while, without having structured process management systems in place. such businesses experience unexplainable leakages and waste.
“Imagine a start-up building a business process management system into its structure from the onset, such a business won’t have issues when it comes to knowledge transfer and quality assurance and even maintaining and achieving customer satisfaction,” he stated.
He attributed the inability of businesses in Nigeria to cross the 50-year line to lack of business process management which, he said, would have provided such businesses, innovativeness on how to operate and serve the customers.
Also speaking at the event, the President and Chairman of Council of the institute, Dr. Yahaya Fufore explained that the decision to form the institute was informed by the need to develop and promote the practice of business process management in Nigeria.
This, he argued, the institute hopes to achieve by providing high quality training required to develop intending and already existing practitioners in the field of business process management.
The BPMI boss added that the institute would prepare and provide BPM practitioners with the required technical and professional knowledge, as well as ensuring value delivery to the public through effective management of the practice in Nigeria.
In his keynote address at the event, former president of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Dr. Nelson Uwaga stated that business process management had become imperative for businesses that want to ensure proper monitoring of processes guiding the management of such businesses.
He noted that with effective deployment of business process management, some of the challenges, such as corruption, lack of basic infrastructures and others, presently facing the nation’s businesses could be properly checked.
