A 200-level Computer Science student of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Chinonso David Ibekwe (25), is currently assisting the police in the state to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of a 67-year-old tricycle operator, Peter Alaebuonu Eseonu.
Speaking during the parade of arrested suspects at the state police headquarters, Umuahia, the state capital, last Friday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Leye Oyebade, said detectives attached to the Central Police Station in Umuahia swooped on the suspect, who then gave a lead towards the recovery of the decomposing body of the tricycle operator in a ditch in Amuzukwu, Umuahia.
According to the police boss, the decomposing body had been deposited in the morgue for autopsy. The suspect has been charged to court and remanded in prison.
The police were also able to arrest another murder suspect, Ogbonnaya Igwe, who allegedly shot a woman on Number 22, Obohia Road, Aba.
According to the state police commissioner, “On July 9, at about 11:00a.m, information was received that someone had been shot along Obohia Road, Aba. Immediately, a patrol team attached to Ndiegoro Division, rushed to the scene, where the deceased was met in a pool of blood.
“The Divisional Police Officer, Ndiegoro mobilised other patrol teams and proceeded to the scene, while the suspect, one Ogbonnaya Igwe, was arrested in the ceiling of the house.
“One pump-action rifle and a double-barreled gun with 15 live cartridges and four expended cartridges were recovered from the suspect and at the scene respectively.
“The corpse of the deceased, later identified as Ijeoma Chibuzo, has, however, been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy while investigation is ongoing to ascertain why the suspect killed his victim,” Oyebade said.
The alertness of the people at Ugba Junction Market Square, Umuahia, also prevented a robbery incident from occurring on July 8.
“After the police got the information, a patrol team attached to Owerrinta Division raced to the area, where one Kingdom Jonah Udo of Eleme in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, was accosted of his mission there.
“The suspect confessed that he was waiting for two of his gang members who had gone out with a Dee-Damak motorcycle with registration number Imo: UML 511 QP.
“The other two members, Kingsley Alozie and Charles Tochukwu, who later returned at about 11:00p.m, were also arrested.
“During a search on them, eight live cartridges, three live 5.56mm ammunition, six mobile phones, as well as N115, 850 were recovered, including the vehicle and motorcycle.
“The case is still under investigation and the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of its findings,” the police commissioner said.
